With the football season currently paused, there’s plenty of speculation about how, or even if, the current Premier League season will be concluded. One of the stumbling blocks about a possible resumption was the issue of player contracts. There are numerous players in the top flight whose contracts expire at the end of June, so as it stands, they’ll be able to walk out on their clubs, even if the season hasn’t ended. However, the Premier League have announced that they will ratify short extensions for those clubs and players who wish to stay on until the end of the season. We’ve taken a look, club-by-club, at every player who, as it stands, could be free to leave their clubs on July 1st.
Arsenal
Arsenal currently have no players who are set to be out of contract at the end of the season.
Aston Villa
Borja Baston was signed as cover in January and looks set for an exit. 22-year-old Keinan Davis is also out of contract but a deal to keep him is still on the cards.
Bournemouth
Bournemouth could be in a bit of trouble, given how many players they have who will be out of contract at the end of June. Ryan Fraser would likely be the biggest miss but Jordon Ibe, Charlie Daniels, Andrew Surman, Simon Francis, Artur Boruc and Brad Smith could also leave.
Brighton
Beram Kayal and Ezequiel Schelotto are both coming to the end of their deals. Kayal is on loan at Charlton whilst Schelotto hardly plays, so Brighton should be fine.
Burnley
Aaron Lennon, Phil Bardsley and Jeff Hendrick all play pretty regularly and would be misses for the Clarets. Backup goalkeepers Joe Hart and Adam Legzdins could also leave.
Chelsea
Chelsea could lose three pretty high-profile attacking players in Olivier Giroud, Pedro and Willian, as well as back-up goalkeeper Willy Caballero. Losing the three forwards, in particular, could be a huge blow for the Blues as they chase a Champions League spot.
Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace should be fine as only third choice goalkeeper Stephen Henderson is due to be out of contract.
Everton
Everton’s first-choice XI would not be affected too badly, but their depth could take a hit as back-ups Leighton Baines, Cuco Martina, Oumar Niasse and Maarten Stekelenburg are all due to be out of contract at the end of June.
Leicester
Like Everton, Leicester’s first-choice XI shouldn’t be impacted too much but their depth could be, which is a worry in what could be a condensed season. Nampalys Mendy, Christian Fuchs, Wes Morgan and Eldin Jakupovic are all set to leave on July 1st.
Liverpool
Adam Lallana is Liverpool’s most high-profile player who could leave. Nathaniel Clyne is also set to be out of contract, as is fourth-choice goalkeeper Andy Lonergan.
Manchester City
Manchester City could see one of their greatest ever players, David Silva, leave on July 1st. Back-up ‘keeper Claudio Bravo could also leave for free.
Manchester United
Manchester United have no players due to be out of contract.
Newcastle
Youngster Matty Longstaff has become a regular for the Magpies and he would be a big loss, both in the short and long term. Back-up options Andy Carroll, Jack Colback, Rob Elliot, Javier Manquillo and Jamie Sterry could also leave for free, which would limit the options available to Steve Bruce.
Norwich
Norwich have no players due to be out of contract at the end of June.
Sheffield United
John Lundstram’s contract is set to expire but Sheffield United have the option to trigger a one-year extension and it would be a shock if they didn’t do that. Elsewhere, squad players Leon Clarke, Phil Jagielka, Ricky Holmes and Jack Rodwell could all leave
Southampton
Striker Shane Long is a regular starter for the Saints and it would be a blow to lose him as he’s forged a decent partnership with Danny Ings.
Tottenham
Tottenham have apparently held talks with Jan Vertonghen about extending his deal but nothing has been signed yet. Backup goalkeeper Michel Vorm was brought in from the wilderness to cover for Hugo Lloris’ injury and he too will be out of contract.
Watford
Losing first-choice goalkeeper Ben Foster would be a massive blow for the Hornets as they look to survive relegation and the fact that deputy Heurelho Gomes is also set to be out of contract hardly helps. Veterans Jose Holebas and Adrian Mariappa are also set to be free agents, as things stand.
West Ham
Veteran full-back Pablo Zabaleta will be free to walk away at the end of June, as will midfielder Carlos Sanchez
Wolves
As it stands, second-choice goalkeeper John Ruddy, out-of-favour full-back Phil Ofosu-Ayeh and youngster Bright Enobakhare will all be leaving Wolves.
